A number of local organisations have endorsed the Manifesto for Sustainable Journalism, a document that sets out the challenges and charts the way forward for a stronger independent journalism in Malta and Europe.

The document is the culmination of a two-year EU-funded project called S-Info Sustainable Information, in which Repubblika partnered with another three civil society and journalism entities from Italy, Belgium and Romania.

The manifesto defines sustainable journalism as journalistic practice that conforms to high ethical standards such as transparency and commitment to truth, and to values such as social justice and honest governance, while the safety, resilience and well-being of those who produce news and information is ensured.

Among other actions, the manifesto calls for sustainable funding for independent journalism, alliances between journalism and activism, education in media and critical thinking, and transnational cooperation.

Repubblika presented the manifesto at a special event in Valletta last Saturday. Local entities that have endorsed it include the Institute of Maltese Journalists, Times of Malta, Newsbook, the Daphne Foundation, ADPD, Momentum, Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar, Friends of the Earth and the African Media Association Malta. A number of individuals have also signed the manifesto.

The manifesto is a tool for collective mobilization, an open commitment by all who believe that without independent journalism, there can be no vibrant democracy. We warmly invite activists, civil society organisations, journalists, media houses, academics and other committed parties to read it and sign it HERE.
