Repubblika is republishing the two investigative stories from Malta whose authors received financial support and mentorship from S-Info – Sustainable Information, an EU-funded project that involved civil society organisations from four EU countries.
Among other objectives, the project sought to bring activists and journalists together to collaborate on investigative journalism.
The resulting stories from Malta, by Mehk Chakraborty (above, left) and Victor Paul Borg (right), were first published on S-Info’s website in July, 2025.
The eight story proposals – two from each country – were chosen in a competition from a number of proposals addressing critical issues such as the environment, social rights, and corruption. The selection was based on rigorous criteria emphasizing journalistic value, originality, and impact. The authors also needed to partner with a civil society organisation in investigating and developing their stories, which they did over the course of six months.
Mehk Chakraborty collaborated with Malta LGBTIQ Rights Movement (MGRM) to focus on the conditions of LGBTQIA migrants in Malta and the contradiction between the treatment of LGBTQIA migrants and the perceived safety of the LGBTQIA community in the country.
Victor Borg worked in collaboration with Flimkien Ghal Ambjent Ahjar, focusing on the erosion of rule of law and democracy in the planning sector and on its consequences for the environment. He produced two stories: the first about the circumvention of planning laws to favour development applications, and the second documenting the waste of EU funds intended for rubble walls.
