Repubblika is concerned by the action taken by the officials of the agency that administers the courts who, from the information we have, acted today on instructions from Prime Minister Robert Abela to take judicial steps against Jason Azzopardi.
Repubblika affirms that the rules regarding good order must be respected in all circumstances and in every institution.
Equally, however, the use of the law and the courts by the Prime Minister and the Government in an effort to discredit activists whom they consider a thorn, is a matter of public interest and a threat to the fundamental rights of the citizen.
The circumstances of the case give us reason to believe that this is what happened this afternoon. We condemn what appears to be a serious abuse of power that erodes the people’s trust in the system for maintaining order.
This abuse cannot be tolerated.
