Repubblika takes strong exception to the recent statement published on Facebook by the Commission on Gender-Based Violence wrongfully accusing journalist and activist Manuel Delia of inciting violence against women for a recent article on disgraced MP Rosianne Cutajar. Our kindest interpretation of their statement is that the Commission is woefully ill-equipped to identify what constitutes both misogyny and hate crime, surely fundamental to its ability to operate effectively. At worst, it indicates yet another example in a very long list of the state-sponsored persecution of anyone who dares to criticise the inadequacies of the government and its operators, irrespective of their gender. We would go so far as to say that such a gross mischaracterisation of a journalist and frequent government critic is dangerous and illegal in and of itself. Instead of demanding an apology, the Commission should immediately retract its statement and issue an apology of its own.
