We note with regret that the government persisted with its choice to nominate Edward Zammit Lewis as a judge for the Court of Justice of the European Union.

When he was a government minister Edward Zammit Lewis was in unacceptable contact with Yorgen Fenech. At the time in which these contacts were made it was reasonable for everyone to suspect that Yorgen Fenech was corrupting government ministers. This was a secret and compromising friendship with a person who was eventually accused of ordering the murder of a journalist who was close to exposing the corruption in which he was involved.

With his nomination, the government is showing that it has learned nothing, and that as far as it’s concerned corruption in public life is excusable if the corrupt are from the same tribe.

We hope that Yorgen Fenech’s past will be carefully examined by the people who have yet to decide on this objectionable nomination made by the government.
