Repubblika today sent a letter to the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition concerning the ongoing deadlock in the appointment of a new Chief Justice.
In the attached letter, Repubblika expresses its concern about the harm being done to the perceived independence of the judiciary and calls for the process to be treated as a matter of State rather than partisan calculation.
Repubblika urges both leaders to clarify what is meant by an “anti-deadlock mechanism” and stresses that any reform must further reduce political interference in the administration of justice, not increase majoritarian control.
The letter also reiterates two long-standing recommendations: that the Chief Justice be chosen by and from among members of the judiciary, and that a constitutional convention be convened to strengthen Malta’s democratic institutions for future generations.
