Repubblika has submitted a formal complaint to the Commissioner for Standards in Public Life requesting an investigation into serious allegations made under oath by Judge Lawrence Mintoff concerning Prime Minister Dr Robert Abela.
The complaint, dated 25 February 2026, asks the Commissioner to examine allegations including alleged pressure on a court official, the use of parliamentary questions in circumstances involving a potential personal financial interest, private communications with a sitting judge regarding judicial appointments, and the consideration of partisan political factors in the appointment of the Chief Justice.
Repubblika makes no finding of guilt. However, allegations of this nature, made under oath by a member of the judiciary, warrant independent scrutiny.
The purpose of the complaint is to safeguard public confidence in democratic institutions and the independence of the judiciary while the process for appointing a Chief Justice remains ongoing.
