Repubblika, #occupyjustice, Fondazione Falcone, Aditus Foundation, The Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation, Vuċi Kollettiva, and PEN Malta call for a protest in front of Parliament on Wednesday 2 April 2025 at 18:00 to make a final appeal to Members of Parliament not to weaken the fight against crime and corruption.
Bill 125 removes the right that citizens currently have to directly seek a magisterial inquiry into crimes ignored by the police and the Attorney General. The rule of law requires that crime be investigated by a State that does not look at anyone’s face. While we appreciate the work of institutions, we also know that when it comes to crimes whose investigation has political consequences, our institutions are often hijacked and ineffective.
In a democracy, citizens have a stake in the pursuit of justice and it is an act of tyranny that the government is seeking to crush that stake.
The enactment of Bill 125 is against democracy, against the rule of law, and against the Constitution.
We appeal to all citizens of good will to come in front of Parliament on Wednesday and make their voices heard in a sincere appeal so that our country does not take this grave step back.
