The day after Parliament removed the right of citizens to request a magisterial inquiry, we learned that Robert Abela wants to remove or reduce the right of citizens to request an investigation into unethical behaviour by ministers and people in public life.
In an intimidating statement made by the Prime Minister in a letter to the Commissioner for Standards in Public Life, he said that he wants to change the law to punish those who request investigations that he called frivolous.
Repubblika appreciates that the Commissioner for Standards warned the Prime Minister not to turn back the clock and reduce the rights that the law gives to citizens.
However, we know that when the Prime Minister dreams of removing a citizen’s right, he will not hesitate at all. In less than four months he has made a law that has taken away our right to request a magisterial inquiry.
Robert Abela wants to stop all this to protect himself and his friends in their wheeling and dealing.
We remember that Robert Abela has already tampered with this law when he removed the need for the Opposition’s agreement in the selection of the Commissioner so that he can appoint whoever he wants. But unfortunately for him, the person he appointed turned out to be a worthy defender of the law, ethics, and citizens and did not go into hiding when threatened by Robert Abela. This courage deserves the respect and appreciation of honest citizens.
So now Robert Abela has declared that he will again abuse his Parliamentary majority to change the law for his personal benefit and that of his friends. We are disappointed that no Member of Parliament from the Government has the backbone to stand up to this erosion of democracy. They are all participating in taking away our right to be governed by people who behave according to ethical standards.
