We refer to the news that former President of Repubblika Robert Aquilina has been summoned for questioning regarding what he wrote and stated regarding the magisterial inquiry into Pilatus Bank, probably to ask him to reveal the sources that gave him the information on which he based his writings and statements.

We reiterate the following:

1. Whistleblowers are essential for any serious fight against corruption. Without them, evil remains hidden and continues to be done. We have a law that is supposed to protect whistleblowers but it is written to intimidate them. However, the protection of whistleblowers is part of European law and therefore our law as well.

2. The Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights protects the right of journalists and writers to protect their sources. This is necessary for us to truly have the freedom to be informed about what the corrupt and criminal want to hide.

These are legal principles that protect our democracy and any attempt by the Police and authorities to crush these principles is an affront to the fundamental rights of every citizen.

Repubblika will use all means provided by law to protect this right.
