Repubblika calls on those who cherish democracy to respond with their presence to Prime Minister Robert Abela\\’s explicit threats to democracy and the rule of law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We cannot have democracy if the law is not the same for all. And we cannot have a democratic government if the institutional safeguards that expose, stop and punish those who use political power to steal are removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Robert Abela threatened to remove the right of citizens to request magisterial inquiries into crimes ignored by the police. A few weeks later Abela announced that he would exempt politicians and government officials from criminal consequences if they use their office to commit criminal acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is clear that after years of waiting for justice for serious crimes of grand corruption, Robert Abela wants to forgive the corrupt and wants to create a legal environment in which the corrupt do not have to worry that one day someone will stop them from stealing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is why it is really important that whoever wants the rule of law in Malta, not the rule of criminals, makes his voice heard and attends this month\\’s vigil which will meet on Thursday 16 January 2025 to insist on justice for Daphne Caruana Galizia, a journalist who was killed fighting corruption. The vigil will meet in the square in front of the Court at 18:30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The main speaker at the vigil will be Simon Busuttil who was the first to call for the inquiry, now concluded, into the corruption revealed in the Panama Papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other speakers: Repubblika President Vicki Ann Cremona, #occupyjustice activist Martina Farrugia, Robert Louis Fenech from Moviment Graffitti, and Manuel Delia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
